Biafra leader Nnamdi kanu in fresh trouble

the release of Nnamdi Kanu

Activities of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have pitted the group’s leader, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, against the South East Peoples Assembly (SEPA).

For organising a sit-at -home after he obtained a court bail, SEPA has asked the Federal High Court, Abuja, to revoke the bail granted Kanu, a pro-secession leader.

IPOB in collaboration with other groups, on Tuesday organised a successful sit-at-home in South East, an action SEPA regards as a breach of the bail conditions granted Kanu.

Kanu, leader of IPOB, has been facing trial for treason and terrorism, being a major sponsor for the secession of South East from Nigeria on the platform of IPOB.

He was arrested on October 15, 2015 in Lagos and eventually granted bail in May this year with some conditions.

The Federal High Court, Abuja, admitted him to bail on health grounds.

Justice Binta Nyako said that she was convinced that Kanu was ill and needed more medical attention than the Nigerian Prisons was giving him.

She, however, ordered that while on bail, Kanu must not hold any rallies, grant any interviews or be in a crowd of more than 10 people.

Nyako gave other bail conditions to include three sureties in the sum of N100 million each.

The judge further ordered that Kanu must deposit both his Nigerian and British passports with the court and that a report on the progress of his health must be made available to her on a monthly basis.

She adjourned the matter till July 11 and 12, for definite commencement of trial.

However, SEPA has accused Kanu of infringing on the bail conditions.

In a letter to the Chief Judge of the High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta, the President of SEPA, Prince Chukwuemeka Okoriein, as the court, as a matter of urgency, to revoke Kanu’s bail.

He said that Kanu has continued to conduct himself in a manner that was totally at variance with terms and conditions of his bail.

He listed the infractions to include holding rallies, grant of interviews or be in a crowd of more than 10 people.

“Obviously, the recklessness with which he made media statements and even organised the ‘Sit at Home and Stay Indoor’ protest to mark the so called BIAFRA HEROS DAY on Tuesday, 30th May, 2017 is a threat to the unity, security and peace of Nigeria as a sovereign nation.

“We have no iota of doubt that he is trying to push our dear country Nigeria into an unnecessary precarious situation for his personal agenda and those of his paymasters.

“Sir, our decision to write this demand letter to your good office at this time is to forestall another civil unrest in Nigeria, particularly around the Igbo speaking region.

“As you well know, the struggle by Kanu to be relevant under the guise of actualisation of Biafra does not enjoy the support of right thinking Igbo people both at home and in diaspora.

“That he suddenly addresses himself as the Supreme Leader of Biafra points to how arrogant and disrespectful he is to legitimately constituted authority in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The pertinent question on our minds as stakeholders is: Has Kanu been consistent in providing the court with reports on the progress of his health and treatment on a monthly basis since he was granted bail?

“We fear that if Kanu is not tamed by Your Lordship as a matter of urgency, the IPOB may create a situation where it becomes difficult if not impossible for genuine development to take place in the South East under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.”

“History has taught us that the Civil War of 1967-1970 started gradually and later turned out to be something that caused our people unimaginable losses.

“We cannot afford to fold our arms this time and allow a stooge imported from the United Kingdom by stark enemies of Nigeria to maintain a state of belligerence against the nation and keep the name of Igbo people in the news for the wrong reasons.”

BIAFRA UPDATE: Reason I’m fighting for secession of Igbos from Nigeria – Nnamdi Kanu

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, says the demand for the secession of Igbos and the entire South-East from Nigeria is because Nigeria is not functioning well and can never function.

Kanu said this in an interview with Al-Jazeera, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Biafran war on Tuesday May 30.

In a chat at his Father’s house in Umuahia, Abia state, Kanu said “Nothing seems to be working in Nigeria. There is pain and hardship everywhere. What we’re fighting [for] is not self-determination for the sake of it. It’s because Nigeria is not functioning and can never function.”

Kanu who was granted bail last month, says he doesn’t care if he is flouting one of the terms for his bail which prohibits him from granting media interviews.

“I don’t care. I can’t go outside to call for a press conference. I can’t go on Biafra Radio to broadcast. I can’t allow large [groups of] people to basically congregate outside to see me…it’s like asking me not to breathe,” he said.

Kanu decried the perceived marginalization of the Igbos in Nigeria, saying that they have been prevented from aspiring to assume important positions in the country such as President, Inspector General of Police, Chief of Army Staff amongst others

“I’m not allowed to contest for the presidency of Nigeria because I’m Igbo. I’m not allowed to aspire to become the inspector general of police because I’m Igbo.

“I’m not allowed to become chief of army staff because I’m Igbo. What sort of stupid country is that? Why would any idiot want me to be in that sort of country?” he quipped.

Breaking: EFCC seizes Barrister George Turnah's second property in Abuja

EFCC seizes Goodluck's godson George Turnah's second property in Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has seized another property from George Turnah, a godson to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The property, which is located at Citec Estate, Gwarinpa, Abuja, is a duplex. Although the EFCC has yet to evaluate the value of the property, sources told our correspondent that such property would go for between N70m and N100m.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the inscription, ‘EFCC, Keep off’ was seen across the fence and the gate of the building.

The commission is still tracing Turnah’s remaining properties.

Last week, the anti-graft agency seized a mansion and some other properties allegedly traced to Turnah who is standing trial for an alleged N3bn fraud.

The commission also froze about seven bank accounts through which Turnah allegedly received billions of naira.

Justice Ibrahim Watilat had granted the interim forfeiture order based on an application filed before the court by the EFCC’s counsel, Adebola Olatunji.

Turnah, together with seven companies, were arraigned on 12 charges bordering on obtaining money by false pretences, money laundering and abuse of office to the tune of N3, 094, 268, 235.69.

Meanwhile, some aggrieved youths in Bayelsa State on Tuesday staged a peaceful demonstration in Yenagoa, the state capital, in support of the EFCC.

The youths, particularly commended the anti-graft agency for the arrest and detention of  Turner.

On Tuesday, the angry youths, under the aegis of the Concerned Citizens of Bayelsa State, led by their coordinators, Chief Harrow Zuokomor and Mr. Abule Bethel, said Bayelsa was still in shock at the magnitude of funds seized from Turner by the EFCC.

The youths were armed with placards bearing inscriptions such as, ‘We thank the EFCC for exposing corrupt persons,’ ‘Enemies of Niger Delta exposed,’ ‘Well done EFCC’ and ‘George Turner impoverished Bayelsa State.’

The protesters, who started the solidarity march from the popular Ekeki Park to the state House of Assembly Complex and the Headquarters of the State Police Command, noted that they had read and seen reports of the funds allegedly diverted by Turner.

They pleaded with the EFCC to consider returning the money to the state.

Zuokomor, while submitting the group’s petition to the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Asuquo Amba, for onward submission to the EFCC, expressed concern over the level of corruption among political appointees.

Addressing the demonstrators, Asuquo promised to deliver their message to the appropriate authorities.

.BAYELSANS PROTEST AGAINST GEORGE TURNAH, DEMANDS FURTHER PROTECTION
Written by Bodmas Kemepadei
More trouble seems to have inflicted the Godson to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Barrister Alabh George Turnah, as his kinsmen, Youths and women from his home state staged a massive protest against him on Tuesday 30th may at the YENAGOA capital, calling on further Prosecution by the EFCC and also asking for returns of all funds amounting to billions, alleged to have been looted from the Niger Delta Development commission  (NDDC), during his time as S.A to the commission.
BAYELSANS PROTEST AGAINST GEORGE TURNAH, DEMANDS FURTHER PROTECTION

The protesters alleged that the funds found in his possession as revealed by the EFCC, was meant for the development of the Niger Delta region, which was diverted during the past administration.

It could be recalled that Barr. Alabh George Turnah, was arrested by the EFCC, taken to court and was remanded in Kirikiri prison on corruption charges, as delivered by Justice Ibrahim Watilat of the Federal High Court, sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Wednesday. Though his lawyer has been told to apply for bail
He is facing a 12-count charge bordering on obtaining by false pretense, money laundering and abuse of office to the tune of N3, 094, 268, 235.69.

The angry protesters staged a demonstration in support of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the arrest and detention of Mr. George Turnah, the godson to former President Goodluck Jonathan and former special adviser to an erstwhile Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The youths, under the aegis of the Concerned Citizens of Bayelsa state and led by their coordinators, Chief Harrow Zuokomor and Comrade Abule Bethel, said though the state was still in shock at the magnitude of seized funds and projects it was meant for in some parts of the state, the protest was to commend the EFCC and ask the anti-graft agency to return the seized fund to the state for development purposes.

The youths, armed with placards bearing inscriptions such as ‘We thank the EFCC for exposing corrupt persons,’ ‘Enemies of Niger Delta exposed,’ ‘welldone EFCC’ and ‘George Turnah impoverished Bayelsa state’, stated that the state is hungry for development and the return of the fund to the state government will ensure proper and even development.

The protesters, who started the solidarity march from the popular Ekeki park to the state house of assembly and the headquarters of the state police command, noted that they have read and seen on the pages of national dailies the monies allegedly diverted by George Turnah and pleaded with the EFCC to consider returning the money to the state.

Chief Harrow Zuokomor, while submitting the group’s petition to the state commissioner of police, Mr. Asuquo Amba, for onward submission to the EFCC, noted with concern that the issue of corruption among political appointees from the state to national level has eaten deep into the fabrics of the state and has continued to impoverish the ordinary people of Bayelsa state.

Addressing the demonstrators, the commissioner of police in the state, Mr. Asuquo Amba, promised to deliver their message to the appropriate authorities.

Turnah, a special adviser on youths to the erstwhile Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Mr. Bassey Dan Abia, was arrested in Port Harcourt in March this year in connection with alleged possession of N2billion suspected to be funds siphoned from the NDDC while serving there between 2012 and 2015.

Woman offers her 4-months-old baby for N100,000 naira

Court

A young woman aged 25, Sandra Ishaku, was on Tuesday arraigned at a Jos Upper Area Court for allegedly selling her four-month-old baby for N100,000.

She along with three others Amechi Emmanuel, Jones Osim (a lawyer) and Gladys Chukwuma were charged with conspiracy, cruelty, and child abandonment.

According to the prosecutor, Mr. L. O. Ocho, Ishaku, on May 10, 2017, sold her baby to Chukwuma for N100,000.

Ocho told the court that the transaction was carried out in Jos, in the chambers of Osim, a legal practitioner. “Ishaku (the accused) conspired with Emmanuel and sold her baby to Chukwuma, who had just relocated from Ebonyi State to Jos,” he said.

The Presiding Judge, Yahaya Mohammed, did not take the plea of the accused, opting to remand three of them – Ishaku, Emmanuel and Chukwuma in prison custody, while the matter was adjourned to June 1, when hearing would commence.

Mohammed, however, granted Osim bail after his counsel, Mr. Lawrence Anya, pleaded that he be released on bail to the Nigeria Bar Association Plateau State Chapter.

A similar appeal by Mr. Peter Ikeolu, counsel to the three others, had earlier been rejected after the prosecutor argued that freeing them would affect investigations into the matter.

Southeast Nigeria shut down as they mark 50 years of Biafra existence

Biafra Day Celebration

NEWS UPDATE
Shops, schools and businesses were shut in south-east Nigeria on Tuesday, 50 years to the day since an independent rRepublicof Biafra was declared, sparking a brutal civil war.

In Onitsha, the economic hub of Anambra state on the banks of the River Niger, most markets were closed and the streets were largely empty of people and traffic.

Biafra Day Celebration
Separatist sentiment persists in the region, which is dominated by the Igbo people, and the main pro-Biafran independence group has called on supporters to stay at home.

“No work today, we are Biafran, we are not Nigerians,” said Ebere Ichukwu Eli, one of the few people to venture outside, where there was a visible security presence.

“No violence, it is a peaceful sit at home. We are protesting peacefully,” the 47-year-old told AFP.

A woman who gave her name only as Justine, said: “The market is closed today. I’m just going home to stay with my children.

“We want our one Biafra. It’s our land. That’s why we all sit at home today.”

– Over 100 arrested –

The closures were either to commemorate the anniversary in support or because of fears of violence, local people said.

Nigerian police last week denounced “planned protests and order of market closures” and warned it would “deal decisively” with any breach of the peace or unlawful protest.

Last year, demonstrations marking the declaration of Biafran independence turned bloody. Amnesty International said the military gunned down more than 60 people.

Since August 2015, more than 150 people have been killed in pro-Biafra protests, said Amnesty’s Nigeria director Osai Ojigho. Nigeria’s government denies the claim.

“We urge the Nigerian security agencies to conduct themselves in a manner that will ensure public order without resorting to force,” he added.

Amnesty said the security forces had arrested more than 100 members of pro-Biafran separatist groups in the run-up to Tuesday’s anniversary.

Calls for independence never disappeared even after the 30-month civil war, which left more than one million dead, most of them Igbos, mainly from starvation and disease.

Many people accuse the government of failing to invest in the southeast since the end of the war in 1970, blighting development. Some see it as a punishment for the conflict.

Support for secession has increased since the arrest in late 2015 of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the pro-independence Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) movement.

According to him the "Agency received a distress call via the toll free number 767/112 on Monday 29th of May, 2017 at about 7:00am concerning a collapsed 3 storey building on the Island, which prompted the immediate activation of the Agency's Emergency Response Team and other responders which includes the Lagos State Ambulance Service, Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Building Control Agency, National Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to the scene of the incident.

Mr. Tiamiyu noted that preliminary investigation carried out at the scene of the incident revealed that illegal activities of repairs was on going, sands and concrete blocks were seen on upper deck of the building together with scaffolding around it which suggest that construction was going on in the building already inhabited by people.

He however said that proper investigation would be carried out by the relevant Government Agencies to ascertain the actual circumstances leading to the collapsed of the building.

He therefore advised owners and developers of buildings in the State to strictly adhere to the building codes and physical planing laws of the State so as to avert unnecessary loss of lives.

Breaking: It’s time to let Biafra people go

Nnamdi Kanu

BIAFRA NEWS UPDATE
The current antics of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the self-proclaimed leader of the illusory Biafra Republic, brings to mind an often quoted remark by Karl Marx, who pointed out in reference to the 9th November 1799 coup d’etat by Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte in France:

“History often repeats itself, the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce…”

As if to illustrate this thought-provoking adage afresh, post-colonial Nigerian history, which first produced the immense tragedy of Biafra with its horrible litany of death and widespread destruction, is now going on to provide the world with a new version of Biafra that is being preached by the colorful duo of Ralph Uwazurike (MASSOB) and Nnamdi Kanu (IPOB).

In the original historical version of Biafra, the world witnessed General Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu strutting pompously across the stage of history in a crisply starched military uniform, proclaiming for all to hear that “no power in Black Africa” would ever stop Biafra from coming into being.

And now we have a fresh enactment of the Biafran tragedy, this time as farce, with Ralph Uwazurike issuing bogus ‘Aba-made’ Biafran passports to gullible youths willing to believe that an adventurer posing as a Head of State can be trusted to “actualize” the Biafran mirage, while his erstwhile employee Nnamdi Kanu has now suddenly morphed from a fire-breathing bush fighter into the self-ordained rabbi of a bizarre new Jewish religious cult.

Let us hope that this new prophet can now be left in peace to lead his fellow Biafrans to much deserved freedom from the hellish confines of the oppressive Nigerian nation.

Thankfully, the process will probably be swift, since Nnamdi Kanu apparently has very deep pockets, as well as unparalleled access to top political leaders in Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra and Abia States.

Interestingly enough, a three-page spread that was published in the “Sunday Sun” of December 12th 2015 (pages 48-51) threw some very interesting light on what Ralph Uwazurike has been up to with MASSOB, as well as on who the mysterious Nnamdi Kanu actually is.

In the interview he gave to the “Sunday Sun”, published on p. 48 in the newspaper’s edition of December 12th 2015, Ralph Uwazurike complained bitterly that Nnamdi Kanu was originally an unemployed youth whom he hired to supervise the activities of Radio Biafra in London due to the fact that Nnamdi Kanu had legitimate residence status in the United Kingdom.

If indeed Nnamdi Kanu is who Ralph Uwazurike says he is, how did he suddenly become endowed with the tremendous level of funding that appears to have been required to rent large crowds for the unruly demonstrations all over the Eastern states, as well as in Delta and Rivers States?

How was he able to fund a secret radio station within the confines of Nigeria, as well as purchase considerable quantities of sophisticated weapons in preparation for an armed uprising?

Hopefully, the answer to these and many more questions may become known when and if Nnamdi Kanu and his alleged co-conspirators are eventually put on trial.

In the meantime, fellow Nigerians and Ndigbo who have a sense of humor will probably enjoy the free cinema show of Nnamdi Kanu’s efforts to spread his new Jewish faith among the faithful that he has gathered in his father’s compound, clad in white priestly robes, and brandishing a highly symbolic fan artfully decorated with Biafran colors in a bid to demonstrate the nexus between the resurrected Biafra and the mythical Jerusalem that Donald Trump is apparently getting set to proclaim as the heavenly ordained capital of the State of Israel.

Turning now to the possible remedy that might help quell the ongoing agitation for the birth of a Biafran nation, there have been a number of calls in the recent past for some kind of “dialogue” with Nnamdi Kanu and his followers.

This kind of advice is obviously misplaced, notwithstanding the rather bizarre utterances of Bishop Kukah, who once described Nnamdi Kanu as “the most popular politician in Nigeria today”!

If there can be no “negotiation” or “dialogue” with Nnamdi Kanu and his supporters, is there any means of diffusing the present unrest, short of engaging in a shooting war with the neo-Biafran agitators?

Obviously, the best solution would be for the Federal Government to publicly announce that it is prepared to grant a Biafran homeland to all Ndigbo who wish to abandon the choice properties and flourishing business enterprises that they have acquired by dint of back-breaking labor and intense sacrifice over many decades in Lagos, Abuja, Benin, Jos, Maiduguri, etc. and return to Nnewi or wherever else they may choose to relocate to in a newly independent Biafran enclave.

Naturally, the returnees would be unable to carry buildings or other major physical assets with them, so they would be limited to whatever they might be able to fit into a few suitcases and “Ghana must go bags,” with assistance from Eze Ayodele Fayose 1, the newly crowned paramount ruler of Ihiala.

Furthermore, the new Biafran nation would be a landlocked enclave with no access to oil, since no rational indigenes of Akwa Ibom, Cross Rivers, Bayelsa and Rivers States can be expected to associate themselves with the highly illogical caper of the newly proclaimed Biafran nation, a factor that happens to have been one of the underlying causes of the collapse of the original Biafra under the leadership of the late Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu.

It would appear that Ralph Uwazurike, Nnamdi Kanu and the bulk of their hard-core followers are apparently too young to be aware of the deep-rooted reasons for the disastrous collapse of the original Biafra!

Furthermore, once they have returned to Arochwukwu, Umuahia Ibeku, Aba-Ngwa, etc., the citizens of the newly independent “Biafra” should be required to produce passports and legitimate visas each time they wish to visit any part of whatever is left of the dismembered Nigerian nation for business or pleasure, with strict customs controls to regulate the movement of goods and foodstuffs between the new Biafra and every other part of present day Nigeria.

Fair enough?

Interestingly enough, as any diligent student of Nigerian history is aware, there is no such thing as the “Igbo people,” because Igbo happens to be a language and not an ethnic group, just in the same way as Yoruba is a language, and not a tribe!

It so happens that most of the diverse folks who speak the Igbo language – Ngwa, Ohaffia, Wawa, Owerri, etc. – never actually interacted with each other on a regular basis during the pre-colonial era. In fact, some of the dialects that are spoken in certain parts of Ala Igbo are virtually incomprehensible in other Igbo-speaking lands.

Ironically, the often repeated complaint that Nigeria is an artificial creation of British colonialism would therefore also apply to any Biafran state that is formed out of an amalgamation of erstwhile antagonistic Igbo-speaking peoples, the more so as there are now many artificial traditional “kings” all over Ala Igbo, some of whom can be observed to be reigning under bizarre appellations like “Eze Donatus Ahamba 1 of Njikoka” or “Eze Jonathan Ndigbo 1 of Bende local community.”

Oh dear, why all these traditional “rulers” in Ala Igbo always “1”? Why no 2, 3 or 4?

Could it be that nobody in their different communities knows how to count beyond 1?

Or could it be that there have never been any traditional rulers in the history of Igbo-speaking peoples before the trend was initiated a few years ago, possibly to give the famous Nigerian actor Olu Jacob an opportunity of competing with the equally famous thespian Pete Edochie for the honor of winning the Nollywood absurdity prize for best traditional ruler role?

Anyway, the free cinema show of the long-awaited re-actualization of “Biafra” should be allowed to proceed unimpeded.

Hopefully, at the end of the entire process, the farce would have attained such proportions that we would all be encouraged to look forward to the next episode of this vastly entertaining farce.

Meanwhile, the law enforcement agencies would be well-advised to refrain from allowing themselves to be provoked into engaging in running battles with those who have declared their intention of shutting down the South-Eastern States on May 30th.

On the contrary, the new breed die-hard Biafrans should be allowed free passage into the nearest available beer parlors and pepper soup canteens in each of the South-Eastern States to celebrate the past, current or future Biafran independence to their heart’s content.
